New directory will facilitate VoIP - ComReg

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has said a new directory service that will provide email, fax, mobile and IP numbers will be available early next year.

ENUM (tElephone NUmber Mapping) is a service which users sign up for on a voluntary basis. If you have someone's fixed line number then you will be able to access their IP number, fax, mobile, and email as long as they are registered.

ComReg says that ENUM provides a highly efficient mechanism for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to locate called persons, even when their VoIP numbers are unknown.

ComReg's Chairperson, Mike Byrne, said ENUM should also offer real potential for carriers to enhance their interconnection routing and reduce overall operational costs.

Many countries are carrying out ENUM trials, and Ireland is the seventh EU country to move into commercial operation.
