Sport: Van Nistelrooy dream disappears on training ground

Ruud van Nistelrooy's knee broke down in training with PSV Eindhoven this morning as he attempted a comeback from his medial ligament injury. An exploratory operation later revealed major damage to the knee. He is due to have another operation and including the recovery period from that, Van Nistelrooy could be out for up to 8 months, so he'll definitely miss Euro 2000.

Manchester United said that they were still interested in van Nistlerooy when, and if, he returns to full fitness. The Dutch striker's £18.5million move to the Red Devils collapsed last night after he and PSV refused to demands for an exploratory operation, ironically the same operation he had today. United's fears about the injury appeared well-founded as the striker attempted a comeback on the training ground this morning. He fell awkwardly after going for a header and his right knee, which he hurt six weeks ago attempting a bicycle kick, sustained another injury.

The striker was able to walk off the pitch but was taken to St Amna Hospital in the nearby town of Geldrop to see what damage has been done. United had made their demand after they wanted to make sure the Dutch international's medial ligament injury has caused no lasting damage.
