A major clean-up operation is under way in south Dublin.
Flash flooding in the Stillorgan area has caused tens of thousands of euros worth of damage after floods hit at around 11am this morning following torrential rain.
The local authority responsible for the areas worst effected has said it was caused by exceptional rainfall which caused a stream to burst its banks.
Director of Services at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Frank Austin, said unusually intense rain in the Stillorgan and Sandyford area caused the Carysfort-Maretimo stream to flood, as it could not cater with the volume of water.
Damage was caused to houses in four areas through which the stream flows, he added.
He also defended the council's response to the flooding, saying crews had been diverted to deal with the problems as soon as the council became aware.
The authority would be looking at the areas affected, and plans are to be brought to the council in September to improve the drainage and the stream, he said.
