A senior official at Wicklow County Council has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the deaths of two firemen in Bray three years ago.
Mark O'Shaughnessy, 25, and Brian Murray, 46, died fighting a fire in a disused factory when the roof collapsed on top of them on 26 September 2007.
While it is believed the fire started accidentally, the joint garda and Health & Safety Authority investigation is focusing on the response to the incident.
The investigation is looking at whether the lives of the fire officers were put in danger by the actions or lack of action of those in authority.
The man, who is in his 50s, was arrested at 8.15am this morning when he arrived with his solicitor at Bray Garda Station.
He was arrested under Section 13 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act on suspicion of committing an offence of reckless endangerment.
He is now being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
His arrest follows a garda search of Wicklow County Council offices last February. He is the fifth employee of the county council to be arrested in connection with the investigation.
A file on the case will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
