Three NCT vehicle inspectors have been dismissed following following revelations on RTÉ Prime Time Investigates.

Seven staff had been suspended by the operator of the National Car Test, Applus, and in a statement the company confirmed that three of those had been dismissed.

'National Car Testing Service is committed to ensuring that any potential for fraudulent activity within the test system is eradicated and investigations into the allegations made will continue in conjunction with a formal report submitted to An Garda Síochána by NCTS,' it said.

Gardaí investigating matters arising from Monday's programme into the Irish taxi industry have contacted RTÉ as part of their inquiries.

The programme uncovered instances where NCT personnel passed cars that had previously been found to have serious defects, apparently in return for money.

Meanwhile, a Dublin bus spokesperson confirmed there is an internal investigation ongoing within the company into the case of a ‘double-jobbing’ bus driver highlighted in the Prime Time programme.

Asked if any driver has been suspended during the investigation the spokesperson would only say that a person has been taken off driving duties.

A statement from the company also points out that any driver or staff member found to be in breach of their employment contract in relation to the Working Time Directive (which limits drivers to working an average of 48 hours a week) could face disciplinary proceedings.
