A man has been arrested during an eviction in Dundalk, Co Louth.

Finbar Markey of Anti-Eviction Ireland confirmed he was arrested after the sheriff arrived at a property on Chapel Street.

He said he has been charged with a public order offence and will appear at Dundalk District Court in the morning.

The apartment belongs to Eugene Dooley, 35, who last month confirmed he owed substantial arrears on a €220,000 mortgage taken out with Permanent TSB in 2006.

On an earlier occasion, the sheriff left after being unable to gain full entry to the property at Old Library Apartments.

Mr Dooley, a quantity surveyor, says the apartment is now worth no more than €80,000.

He said the last mortgage payment he made was in July and that he is now living on €140 a week.

Mr Dooley claimed a sledgehammer was used to gain entry and he and his brother were forcibly removed.

He criticised the gardaí who were present and said they remained at the scene while a number of men secured a sheet of steel over his front door.

Mr Markey said they are "seeking a judicial review" of the eviction process.
