The 2010 People of the Year Awards will be broadcast on RTÉ One this Saturday, 11 September.

Hosted by Gráinne Seoige, the awards at the Citywest Hotel in Co Dublin allow the Irish public to "honour outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations to life in Ireland".

The winners are chosen by members of the public through a nominations process and are finalised by a panel of adjudicators.

Among the awards are the International Person of the Year, Young Person of the Year and two special awards for 2010: Garda of the Year and Inspiring Mum of the Year.

At a photocall to publicise the event, RTÉ’s new daytime presenter Claire Byrne, who will be attending the awards, said: "I have no doubt that viewers will be reaching for a box of tissues at various times during the show, but the awards ceremony always leaves us feeling good about ourselves as a people and who we are. That feelgood factor is something to be cherished now more than ever."

Another guest on the night, RTÉ rugby analyst Brent Pope, said: "The People of the Year Awards are a really important celebration of people who have done extraordinary things from all walks of life and from all parts of the community across Ireland. They recognise those whose actions are courageous and inspiring and, with each winner nominated by the people of this country, they are all the more prestigious."

The 2010 People of the Year Awards are on RTÉ One on Saturday at 10pm.
