Irish contestant Ryan O'Shaughnessy has secured a place in the final of Britain's Got Talent on Saturday night.

The singer-songwriter along with underwater act Aquabatique went through from Thursday night's heat.

O'Shaughnessy won Thursday's public vote with First Kiss, a song he wrote about his unrequited love for a girl he knows.

Judge David Walliams told him: "This girl who won't go out with you, I don't know who she is but I tell you what, she is doing you a favour because you are writing the most beautiful songs I have ever heard for her."

Simon Cowell joked: "I wouldn't worry about her because you are going to get so much action after this."

He added: "You are a brilliant, brilliant songwriter. Your lyrics make sense, I listened to the lyrics. I think you are a brilliant songwriter and I also think you are a brilliant singer. Maybe you could be the dark horse in this competition."

O'Shaughnessy and Aquabatique will compete against opera singers Jonathan and Charlotte, Welsh choir Only Boys Aloud, Pudsey the dancing dog and his dance partner Ashleigh, boy band Loveable Rogues, singer Sam Kelly, dance group Nu Sxool, ballroom dancers Kai and Natalia and 11-year-old singer Molly Rainford in the final.

On Saturday the judges will reveal which losing act has secured a wildcard place in the final.

The winning act will be on the bill at the Royal Variety Performance and will receive a cheque for £500,000.

Jonathan and Charlotte are the bookies' favourites to win at odds of 4/5, with Pudsey and Ashleigh at 5/2 and O'Shaughnessy at 4/1.
