Ulster Bank is the latest lender here to announce job cuts.

The bank said it was reducing costs by cutting 266 jobs.

It amounts to just under 10% of its workforce.

213 of the positions are based in the Republic with the remaining 53 in Northern Ireland.

The banks said it hopes to achieve the reductions on a voluntary basis, 'where possible.'.

However, in a statement the bank said some people would be put 'at risk' because their role is no longer there.

"We are working to minimise this and to ensure that they are aware of other opportunities for redeployment in the bank," the bank said.

It also said it was creating 57 new roles. 29 of these would be in the Republic and 28 in Northern Ireland.

The bank said it would manage the changes in line with existing processes with the Financial Services Union.

It added that there would be no branch closures.

Ulster Bank reported a €276 million operating loss for the six months to the end of June.

It set aside €278 million to cover potential bad loans arising from the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
