A man has been charged in relation to the fatal assault of man in his 70s yesterday evening in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.
The victim has been named locally as farmer John Cashman.
Gardaí responded to an incident at a house on a large farm in the townland of Cappagh, about 10km east of Dungarvan shortly after 6pm.
The farm is understood to be around 150 acres in size.
Mr Cashman was found with serious injuries and later pronounced dead at the scene.
His body has been removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is being held at a garda station in Waterford. He has since been charged and will appear before court tomorrow morning.
It is understood that he and the victim were known to each other.
The scene was preserved pending a forensic examination and the Office of the State Pathologist was notified.
Gardaí say their investigations are ongoing.
Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan & Lismore Municipal District, Councillor Niamh O'Donovan, said the local community had been left shocked, and will support those who have been affected by the incident.
"It was an awful, awful shock when the incident and the news broke last night in community," Cllr O'Donovan said.
"My thoughts are with the loved ones, the family, the friends of the deceased, and the community and neighbours waking up to the reality of this this morning.
"It is not appropriate for me to comment on the circumstances at the moment, and I would ask that everyone relies on the official communication lines with the investigation ongoing.
"We will be supporting everyone that has been affected. I think everyone is just lost for words this morning in our community," the Fine Gael councillor added.
