Tributes paid to heart transplant pioneer
Dr Christian Barnard made medical history in 1967, when the South African surgeon performed the first successful heart transplant. The patient, Louis Washansky, died 18 days later, but heart transplants have now become an established medical procedure. Nearly 200 people in Ireland alone have benefited so far. Christian Barnard died at the weekend.
