Ken Doherty completed a successful defence of his vcpoker.ie Irish Professional Snooker Championship crown, with a resounding 9-2 win over fellow Dubliner Fergal O'Brien.

From 3-2, the former world champion pulled away with a run of six frames in-a-row, the highlight coming in the ninth frame when he made a break of 111.

Doherty had eight breaks over 40 in all, as he lifted the national title for the third time in his career.

'It might not mean a lot to the other professional players around the world, but to us it means an awful lot,' said the 38-year-old.

'It's a nice confidence boost as well, and hopefully I can keep up this form in the season ahead.'

'Ken played excellent in the last session tonight, the way I needed to play if I was going to get back into it,' commented O'Brien after his first appearance in the Irish final.

Doherty pocketed €6,000 for his success, as well as the €500 highest break prize for his 115 in yesterday's semi-final win against Gerard Greene. O'Brien walked away with €3,000 as runner-up.
