Former Manchester City midfielder Trevor Sinclair has apologised for sending a tweet that labelled Liverpool supporters "bin dippers".

Sinclair sent the tweet after his former club beat Burnley 4-1 to cut the gap to the pace-setting Merseysiders to eight points. It read: "Bin dippers we're coming for you".

Sinclair, 46, has since deleted the tweet, and issued an apology on Wednesday afternoon.

"To any fan that was offended by what I wrote last night I apologize," he tweeted.

"It was a throw away line regarding closing the gap. It wasn't my intention to offend anyone, especially from a social stance. I’m a working class lad and understand how it’s been taken. Sorry."

Liverpool can stretch the gap back to City to 11 points tonight if they beat neighbours Everton at Anfield.
