Defending champion Lindsay Davenport set up a fourth-round match with fellow American Jennifer Capriati when she beat Argentine Paola Suarez 6-4 6-2 at Wimbledon today. The match was a tough one for the world number two with both women getting two breaks of serve in the opening set before Davenport took the deciding break to go 5-4 up.
Davenport, who has had back and ankle injuries recently, did not look completely at ease on Court One at the start but she got into her stride by the end. She broke baseline-hugger Suarez, who had never gone beyond the first round here in five previous attempts, to love in the third game of the second set and hit two aces in the final game as she finished off the match in 62 minutes.
But the best part of Saturday for Davenport was the Centre Court parade of champions when she joined more than 60 others who have made Wimbledon history over the past 80 years. ‘It was unbelievable to be part of that and I am just happy that I could be there.’
Meanwhile, eighth seed Serena Williams is only four matches away from fulfilling her goal of winning Wimbledon after crushing Spaniard Cristina Torrens-Valero 6-2 6-1 in the third round on Friday. The reigning U.S. Open champion has powered her way through the draw in the first week, only dropping nine games in her three matches. Eslewhere women's top seed Martina Hingis swept past Croatia's Silvija Talaja.
